The Complete Guide to Brushing and Flossing

Most people brush their teeth daily but don't get the full benefit. Learn the proper technique.

Brushing and flossing are the foundation of good oral health, yet studies show that most people don't do them correctly. Improper technique can leave plaque behind, leading to cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. As a dentist, the most common issue I see isn't neglect — it's technique. Let's fix that.
Dental hygiene
**Brushing: The right way.** - Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gumline - Use gentle, short strokes — don't scrub aggressively - Brush for a full 2 minutes, covering all surfaces - Replace your toothbrush every 3 months - Use a soft-bristled brush — medium and hard bristles can damage enamel **Flossing: Why it matters more than you think.** - Floss at least once daily, ideally before brushing - Use about 18 inches of floss, wrapping most around your middle fingers - Curve the floss into a C-shape against each tooth - Slide gently below the gumline - Use a clean section of floss for each tooth

Brushing without flossing is like washing only 60% of your body. The other 40% still needs attention.
