Everything you need to know about SAT preparation, from choosing study materials to test-day strategies.

When to Start Preparing

Ideally, begin your SAT preparation 3-6 months before your test date. This gives you enough time to learn strategies, practice consistently, and take multiple full-length practice tests without feeling rushed.

Step 1: Take a Diagnostic Test

Start by taking a full-length practice test under timed conditions. This establishes your baseline score and reveals which sections and question types need the most work. College Board offers free official practice tests.

Step 2: Build a Study Plan

Based on your diagnostic results, create a weekly study schedule. Focus more time on your weakest areas but don't neglect your strengths. Aim for 8-10 hours of SAT prep per week in the 2 months before the test.

Step 3: Practice, Review, Repeat

The key to SAT success is deliberate practice. Don't just do problems — analyze every mistake. Keep an error log: what type of question was it? Why did you miss it? What will you do differently next time?
